The Little Free (Back Alley) Library

The Little Free Library Movement

The Little Free Library project is the world’s largest book sharing movement. A nonprofit organization that inspires a love of reading, builds community, and sparks creativity by fostering neighborhood book exchanges around the world, Little Free Library is celebrating it’s tenth anniversary this year.

And it’s not all about books either, though 3 out of 4 people say they’ve read a book they normally wouldn’t have because they found it in a Little Free Library. It’s more about community. In fact, 73 percent of people surveyed by Little Free Library say they’ve met more neighbours because of a LFL and 92 percent say their neighbourhood feels like a friendlier place because of a Little Free Library.

Our Little Free (Back Alley) Library

You can find our little free (back alley) library behind 109 Keystone Crescent in Leduc.

The library was built by the Horncastle family, with a lot of help from our friendly neighbour, Mr. Harvey. It took us a couple of weeks to build from scratch and it was built with a small budget, so it may not be the nicest library you’ve seen, but it sure is the friendliest.

But Why the Back Alley?

We put the library in our back alley for two reasons. One, we don’t have a front sidewalk, so it’s not safe to stop and get books there. And two, our back alley is like the front porches of houses from many years ago. Kids ride their bikes in the alley, our neighbours gather there, it’s the spot where people come and go, stop to say hi and maybe complain about the weather.

How Does it Work?

Want a book? Help yourself! Want to leave a book for someone else to read? Great! We’d love to have it. The library is always open and always free to use.

Our library has more than just books! Inside you’ll find community information too! Bus routes, garbage collection calendars, activity guides, and more.
